Using the Wheel of Life to find more contentment and balance

The wheel of life is a clever little tool to assess different categories of your life and figure out what’s working (and what isn’t).

Some coaches like to call this a “life balance wheel” with a core focus on work/life balance.

My version is so much more than simply “professional versus personal life”. Because with an increase in remote and hybrid working models since the pandemic, and more blurry lines between working from home and living at work, it's key (for me) to include and offer categories such as mental wellbeing, physical wellbeing, home environment, and work environment.

Here's the Wheel of Life I created - but you can easily cross out the categories and change the titles to make them meaningful to you.

The Wheel of Life

Using the Wheel of Life

#1 - Download my free Wheel of Life HERE or create your own categories.

#2 - Add today’s date. This is important because when you look back at this in six months (set a calendar reminder for six months today), you’ll be able to see your progress.

#3 - Rate each category on a scale of 1- 10. Closest to the middle is 1 (not doing so great) and the outer edge is a 10 (bloomin’ brill!).

For each category, there’s a “go with your gut reaction” to rate each one on a scale of 1 (not great) to 10 (amazing). The key really is: don’t overthink it. Because the magic is in how it shines a light on the areas of your life based on your immediate scoring - not the score you overthink. ;)

For the high-achievers out there, please know that 10/10 on all chosen categories might not be realistic. For instance - fun and leisure might have been a 1/10 during the pandemic due to restrictions that were totally out of your control.

#4 - Reflect on your answers and what they mean to you to find more contentment and balance

  • Where are you right now versus where you want to be?

  • What’s in your control to change?

  • What do you want to change?

  • Who do you need to be and what do you need to do to make those changes?

  • Who can support you with those changes?

  • What happens if you don't take action? What does the opposite look like?

  • How much of a difference would it make to your life if you worked on just one area?

Then make your plan to move forward and review your progress after six months. Because it’s not about aiming to go from a One to a 10 in a matter of weeks. Even planning to nudge up a notch or two over the course of the year could make all the difference to your feelings of contentment and greater balance.

Btw - there is NOT a perfect score. There’s no wrong or right answer. And what balance looks and feels like to me is likely to be completely different to you. That's the beauty of using the Wheel of Life: it's all about your perception of what's working and what isn't.
